BBC Gold Book Story. Did Ancient Peoples Keep Records On Metal Plates?

BBC Headline Reads
Unique book goes on display

Compiled by Brian Marshall

Most the Protestant and Catholic Christian world have many problems with the Book of Mormon story. Because of Salt Lake Utah Mormonism's many prevalent, unbiblical doctrines. Most people assume Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon promote these doctrines. In fact Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon condemns the doctrines of Polygamy, Adam God Theory, ( men can become God's ), and other such unbiblical Utah nonsense.

Someone has told a lie
Someone has told us a lie. Any being of discernment can see there is a lie somewhere around the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. It has been said the lie was started by Joseph Smith himself. Most people commonly assume by association the Book of Mormon perpetuates this lie. Or worse the Book of Mormon was manufactured by Joseph's " vivid " imagination. This is not the case, but to reveal the contradiction we all sense, we must first find bits of truth. Truth which confirms or condemns the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith's story. The BBC Story is such a grain of truth which confirms Joseph Smith was historically on target in his claims. If there is any truth to Smith's story, the archaeological evidences will help us see if there is any truth. Or weather it's all one big hoax?

Let's begin.

In First Nephi of the Book of Mormon, Lehi sent his sons to Laban to retrieve the gold plates from Laban. After suffering much hardship in dealing with Laban, Lehi's sons finally get the gold plates and take them back to their father in the wilderness.

Above text reads: Gold plates held by bearded man ( beard of gold wire )-ancient Mexico.
This gorget of cast gold was discovered on the Gulf coast of Mexico at Papantla in the State of Vera Cruz. Date unknown. Photographed by Thomas Ferguson in the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City. The object is a gorget about 10 centimeters high, and clearly established the use of gold tablets in ancient Mexico, although no inscriptions are on the miniature tablest.

What? Ancient Peoples wrote on Metal Plates?
 Is Joseph Smith crazy?

The question remains did ancient peoples recording their peoples history on metal plates? Other people besides people from the Book of Mormon?  After all if the Book of Mormon is truly an ancient record, why would only Jews or Hebrew speaking people use metal plates to preserve their history? Surely this would be a more wide spread practice than with just the Hebrews.

Asking the Pointed Questions

  1. Did ancient peoples as the Book of Mormon implies keep records on metal plates?
  2.  Is it logical/possible that Joseph Smith did translate an ancient record from metal plates?
  3. Did Israelites keep records on metal plates as recorded by today's modern science?

First we must decided if ancient old world cultures indeed wrote upon metal plates. As you read below, the Roman Empire wiped out a people who wrote upon metal ( gold ) plates. Is it so far fetched a story that Joseph Smith himself claimed to have translated an ancient record by the power of God from metal ( brass ) plates?

Not at all!

Let's view the archaeological evidences which correspond to Joseph Smith's story.

BBC Gold Book Story

The world's oldest multiple-page book - in the lost Etruscan language - has gone on display in Bulgaria's National History Museum in Sofia.

It contains six bound sheets of 24 carat gold, with illustrations of a horse-rider, a mermaid, a harp and soldiers.  The book dates back to 600BC
The small manuscript, which is more than two-and-a-half millennia old, was discovered 60 years ago in a tomb uncovered during digging for a canal along the Strouma river in south-western Bulgaria.

It has now been donated to the museum by its finder, on condition of anonymity.

Reports say the unidentified donor is now 87 years old and lives in Macedonia.
The authenticity of the book has been confirmed by two experts in Sofia and London, museum director Bojidar Dimitrov said quoted by AFP.

The six sheets are believed to be the oldest comprehensive work involving multiple pages, said Elka Penkova, who heads the museum's archaeological department. There are around 30 similar pages known in the world, Ms Penkova said, "but they are not linked together in a book".

The Etruscans - one of Europe's most mysterious ancient peoples - are believed to have migrated from Lydia, in modern western Turkey, settling in northern and central Italy nearly 3,000 years ago.
They were wiped out by the conquering Romans in the fourth century BC, leaving few written records.

We Know Hebrews Wrote On Copper Plates
Hebrew Copper Scroll

The Copper Scroll (3Q15)

Hebrew Copper Scroll
The Copper Scroll (3Q15)

"In the fortress which is in the Vale of Achor, forty cubits under the steps entering to the east: a money chest and it [sic] contents, of a weight of seventeen talents." So begins the first column of the Copper Scroll, one of the most intriguing, and baffling, scrolls to be found among the collection known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Sounding like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, the text of the Copper Scroll (3Q15) describes vast amounts of buried treasure. It was found in 1952 in Cave 3 at Khirbet Qumran on the shores of the Dead Sea, one of the few scrolls to be discovered in the place where it had lain for nearly 2,000 years. Most of what are called the "Dead Sea Scrolls" were found by Bedouin and sold through antiquities dealers, but this one was actually discovered by archaeologists--a rare occasion during those years. In ancient times the text of the document had been incised on thin sheets of copper which were then joined together. At the time it was found, however, the document was rolled into two separate scrolls of heavily oxidized copper which was far too brittle to unroll. For five years scholars and experts discussed ways of opening the scroll. Finally, they decided to cut the scroll into sections from the outside using a small saw. Working very carefully they cut the scroll into 23 strips, each one curved into a half-cylinder. Before it was cut, one scholar thought he saw words for silver and gold and suggested that the scroll was a list of buried treasure. Sure enough, when it was deciphered that scholar turned out to be right!

What about all that treasure? What is it? Has anyone found it? The answer to the last question is, no, at least that they are telling.

The treasure described in the Copper Scroll consists of vast quantities of gold and silver, as well as many coins and vessels. It is difficult to assess the value of what is described, since we are not sure what the weights in the scroll are actually equivalent to, but it was estimated in 1960 that the total would top $1,000,000 U.S.

With this great treasure list, you may ask, why isn't everyone out looking for the treasure? (And why hasn't Stephen Spielberg made a movie out of it?) The truth is, some people are looking for it, but it is not all that easy. To begin with, we do not know what all the words in the text mean. The text is in Hebrew, which is certainly a known language, but most ancient Hebrew texts that we have are religious in nature, and the Copper Scroll is anything but religious. Most of its vocabulary is simply not found in the Bible or anything else we have from ancient times.

Not only is the vocabulary of the scroll very technical, some of the geographical locations are unknown after so many years, many are too specific and some refer to places that no longer exist. Take some of the following examples:

"In the gutter which is in the bottom of the (rain-water) tank..."

"In the Second Enclosure, in the underground passage that looks east..."

"In the water conduit of [...] the north[ern] reservoir..."

There are those who have suggested that the treasure never actually existed, that the Copper Scroll is simply a work of fiction. Even if the treasure did exist, we do not know where it came from or who it belonged to. Some believe the scrolls refer to Temple treasure, hidden for safekeeping before the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 C.E. Others believe the treasure belonged to the sect that lived at Qumran, a sect usually identified with the Essenes, a Jewish group mentioned in the work of the Jewish historian Josephus, who wrote in the 1st century C.E. However, these are just educated guesses. Who the treasure belonged to, and what happened to it, we may never know.

The Plates of Persian King Darius
The Gold Plate of Darius it’s a finely crafted stone box with a flat lid discovered in 1933 under the Apadama (the imperial palace courtyard) at the Persian capital of Persepolis. The Plate is from the period of the Persian Empire (in today´s Iran) between the years 518 to 515 B.C.

Inside the box were two plates, one made of gold and the other of silver with a dimension of 13 inch square. The plates were written in three different languages (Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian) in cuneiform characters and were duplicates. The plate proclaimed Darius I majesty over the vast extent of his Persian Empire and it is believed by scholars to be a duplicate of another text found at the original capital of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty, the city of Pasargadae; that text is often called the "Foundation Record" of Darius the Great

Excepts of Joseph Smith's Testimony

Does the Story How He Found the Brass Plates Correspond With Scientific Data?
Joseph Smith's Personal Testimony in which he declares the plates were: "on the west side of this hill not far from the top, under a stone of considerable size, lay the plates deposited in a stone box". Ancient people writing upon metal plates and depositing them in stone boxes in the ground is an ancient practice. 184 years ago, a young Joseph Smith told a story which science today has proven a real possiblity.

Many people doubt the validity of Joseph Smith's story. Did people write upon plates of gold, silver or brass? The evidences seems rather abundantly pointed! It is obvious that Joseph Smith's 180 year old story is in line with what we know today to be scientifically true. Ancient people did keep records on metal plates.
Therefore if Joseph Smith said an angel guided him to a stone box in the ground and gave him plates of brass to translate, we cannot find fault with the record being upon plates of brass. This much of the story has been proven to likely be true.

As I said at the begining someone lied. But how do you know who lied? Better yet how do you know who told the truth?

We have to find the shattered shards of truth once whole. Today because of the lies and selfish interests of men, truth has been smashed into millions of pieces. It is yours and my responsibility to seach for truth so as not to be condemned by another mans lie.

Cool blog. You wrote "How he found the 'brass' plates" at one point when talking about Joseph Smith. I think you meant "Gold Plates"

krachtusk said...

At one point you stated that Nephi and his brothers got the "gold" plates from Laban. According to the text they where brass plates, then you stated later that Joseph found "brass" plate, but according to his record they where gold, so I think you go these two backwards.

@ krachtusk,

Thanks for the correction, yes I'm aware there are a mistakes, the comment prior yours makes the same observation.

I started the blog in 2008, clearly didn't know as much as I should then, nor was I near the writer I am now.

Between life, making a living and raising a family, I don't have as much time as I would like.

I'm hoping in time, God will allow me the finances and time, to make the needed corrections.

God Bless

White Indians In America?

This Blog is about Jesus Christ. About the Book of Mormon which has been much maligned by men who never heard or saw the truth. Even by some who don't want the truth seen by you or I. We of the western world need to open our eyes. We must wake up. We must believe God is real. We must begin to realized we cannot fit God into a small little box with a pretty red bow, only to open it on Sunday so we may have our small controled dose of God. God is everywhere. Therefore His people will be everywhere. Let's find the evidence of the other places Jesus Christ visited besides Jerusalem... The above photo comes from Monte Alban Mexico. The above cross in similitude to an Egyption Coptic Cross. What connections did Egypt and ancient Mexico have?

If the Book of Mormon truly is an ancient history of America, we can search the Book of Mormon, then search archaeology to discover if the Book of Mormon is accurate. 1 Thessalonian's 5:21 states" Prove all things; hold fast that which is good". Only a fool does not test his or her Christian belief to see if it withstands scrutiny and " tough well reasoned questioning". He or she who does not test or question everything in life, religion or career has missed the boat, and the very meaning of life. Which is to find the better way spiritually and temporally, holding fast to that which is good.

In the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi testifies Christ came to America. Christ, in Gospel of Luke is asked a question by the Apostle Peter most people miss. Peter ask Christ who He was, Christ's reply was, who do YOU/THEY say that I am. Luke 9:20. Native Americans record a white god who walked among them. When asked who He was, His reply was to ask, WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM? In ( 1964 ) Pierre Honore wrote a book who's title speaks for it'self. In Quest of the Fair God Pierre Honore illustrates a white God among the Native America, who was named many different names where ever He went. Mr. Honore says, " The legend of a particular white God has survived to our day from all ancient civilizations of Central and South America. The Toltecs and Aztecs of Mexico called Him Quetzalcoatl, the Incas called Him Viracocha To the Maya he was called Kulkulcan who brought them all their laws, and also their script, and was worshiped like a God by the entire people. To the Chibchas, he was Bochica, the white mantle of light. To the Aymara of Peru he was Hyustus, and to this day they will tell you he was fair and had blue eyes. Everywhere in the Indian states of Central and South America the legend of the White God is known, and always ends in the same way. The White God left his people with a solemn promise that he would one day come back."

A Hebrew People In America?

Can there be Hebrews in America? What does the Bible say?

Matthew 15:24

But He ( Jesus ) answered them and said, I am not sent but unto the LOST SHEEP of the house of the house of Israel

Jesus told us He must minister to Israelites " other sheep I have not of this fold then also must I bring ", ( John 10:16 KJV ).

Ezekiel 34:6;11;12-13 declares:

6My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.

11For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day** that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

** ( in the day means during Christ earthly ministry 2000 years ago )

13And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.

For the Book of Mormon to be a valid history of an ancient people long dead, there must be Biblical evidence such a people exist. The words of Christ and Ezekiel confirm such a people are scattered world wide.

The BBC World News " gold book discovery " and other sources confirm Joseph Smith did not lie. History since 1830 proves the Book of Mormon record coming with Lehi from Jerusalem could well have been brass, that Joseph Smith could easily have translated the Book of Mormon from gold plates.
